JSW’s tailored drilling solution helps Alcoa meet mineral sampling and environmental goals

JSW Australia continues to lead the way in innovative drilling solutions with its purpose-built EQ150 drill rig, developed to meet the unique demands of bauxite mining operations.

Leveraging the engineering expertise of JSW’s technical team, the EQ150 rig has been tailored to perform in a forestry environment. Its compact footprint, low ground pressure, and advanced automation features make it an ideal solution for the sensitive, often challenging terrain encountered on Alcoa’s sites in WA’s Peel region.

The company customised a specialist cab chassis to meet the stringent requirements for minimal environmental disturbance. Both the cab and the custom-designed drill control station are fitted with advanced safety features, designed to meet Australian standards and Alcoa’s specific operational protocols — delivering enhanced protection and risk management in sensitive terrains.

A key feature of the chassis is its ability to both oscillate and articulate, enabling the rigs to manoeuvre tightly and efficiently around standing trees. The machines also offer high ground clearance to traverse over fallen logs and natural obstacles, while maintaining a low centre of gravity for outstanding stability in uneven, rugged conditions.

Through its longstanding partnership with Alcoa, JSW has deployed the EQ150 fleet across key bauxite exploration locations, supporting Alcoa’s operational goals with improved productivity, enhanced safety, and reduced environmental impact. The rigs’ remote operation capability, coupled with real-time data capture, provides Alcoa with valuable operational insights while keeping crews safe.

This collaboration reflects both companies’ shared commitment to operational excellence, continuous improvement, and sustainable resource development. By working closely with Alcoa’s operational teams, JSW continues to refine and evolve the EQ150 platform — ensuring it remains at the forefront of drilling innovation for the resources industry.
